Beef Afritada Recipe

The entire family will enjoy the simple, one-pot dish known as beef afritada. With fork-tender beef, root vegetables, and vibrant bell peppers in a thick, savoury tomato sauce, this Filipino beef stew is filling and delicious!

My take on chicken afritada is one of the most read and viewed recipes on Kawaling Pinoy. I’m not surprised that this dish is among the top ten dishes that consistently receive the most traffic.

It will satisfy you with its flavorful slow-cooked bell peppers, delicate root veggies, and juicy chicken.

But today, it’s all about the beef afritada. I have to say that this is by far my favourite of the various variations of the common Filipino stew. Even though I’m not a great fan of beef, there’s something irresistible about fork-tender meat drenched in a rich, meaty sauce.

Additionally, it only only a few basic ingredients and one pan to prepare. Ideal for hectic weeknights!

Cooking Tips

To help the vegetables keep their shape while cooking in the sauce, pan-fry the potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers.

For even cooking, cut the beef into equal-sized pieces.

With too much moisture, the meat will steam and not become caramelised, so pat dry with paper towels.

Beef should be well seared. Avoid packing the pan too tightly as you brown on medium-high heat. Give the meat time to sear before rotating; be patient.

How to serve

Serve afritadang baka with steamed rice as the main course for lunch or dinner. It’s also one of my favourites to use it as pandesal filling for a snack in the middle of the day.

Storing leftovers

Place any leftovers in a container with a lid, then either freeze them for up to two months or refrigerate them for up to three days.

Reheat in a saucepan to 165 F, if necessary loosening consistency with additional water or beef broth. Alternately, reheat in the microwave in increments of 2 to 3 minutes until thoroughly heated.
